Over the Counter Yeast Infection Treatments

Depending on the severity of a yeast infection a different kind of treatment will be needed. In the lightest of cases over the counter yeast infection treatments will be good enough to take care of the problem. Three particular brands are sold in markets today and there are different risks involved with all of these yeast infection treatments to be aware of.

Monistat is one of the most popular over the counter yeast infection treatments on the market today. Made by Pfizer and available as GyneCure and Gyno-Trosyd in other countries, Monistat is a topical product that can be applied to take care of the fungus that is common in a typical yeast infection. Each package comes with a one day treatment that can help to take care of the fungus and reduce the risk of any discharges in the vaginal area. It can take up to seven days for the fungus to be fully eliminated though and in some cases it may require multiple treatments to take care of the problem.

Mycelex, formerly known as Femstat, is another of the over the counter options to use. This is used for cases where the severity of a yeast infection is light. It is a topical treatment that contains three separate applicators for daily treatment that can help to reduce any discharges that may be present with a yeast infection. It does cause adverse reactions in some people, as it contains the chemical butoconazole. It is also expensive to use at nearly twenty dollars in most places.

The third of the over the counter yeast infection treatments is Monistat-3 and Monistat-7. Monistat-3 will help to reduce itching in the vulvar area but it can be easy to develop an allergy to it. Monistat-7, meanwhile, will take care of most any vaginal infection. It will require seven days of discharges to fully work properly. It also comes with only one applicator that will have to be washed and reused for the duration of the contents that come with it.

It should be known that the most common risk of all of these treatments is that they may not work for every person. In some cases the problem in the vaginal area may not be a yeast infection and the woman is treating the problem with the wrong strategy. In other cases the yeast infection may be more severe and a stronger prescription strength drug that is available through a doctor will be able to treat the problem. By contacting a doctor it will be easier to get a good idea as to whether or not the severity of a yeast infection will be enough for an over the counter treatment or for something more or less.

Over the counter yeast infection treatments can be useful in that they can help to reduce the pain that a woman has in a yeast infection. These treatments can also take care of the building parts of bacteria that are common in a yeast infection. Of course it should be known that each treatment will work differently and that some infections won't be treatable with over the counter treatments.
